Encryption FAQ

Why should I encrypt?

In the event your laptop is lost or stolen, encryption prevents anyone else from gaining access to your data.

Which encryption software is right for me?

This answer is dependent on what you IT department supports, what you are trying to encrypt and if those solutions work on the types of data you need to encrypt. ITS Supported Encryption Products

How much does encryption software cost?

PGP and FDE are funded through network recharge, there are no additional charges.

Can I use different encryption software?

Yes, users are not required to use university provided encryption software.

Where can I install PGP or FDE?

Any computer used for UCSF business/mission. That includes personal computers, however you will need to check with your local CSC to find out if they provide support for non-UCSF devices. PGP is provided "as-is". Remember to backup your data regularly.
